Mall Postpones Grand Opening After Huge Crowd Assembles for Discount Sale

Takoradi Mall Forced to Postpone Opening After Huge Crowd Floods Premises

A new shopping mall in Takoradi, the Red Star Mall, got more than it bargained for when its grand opening promo turned into a massive crowd event.

Ahead of the October 16, 2025 launch, management had announced huge discount offers on groceries and electrical appliances — a move meant to attract first-time shoppers and establish customer loyalty.

However, the turnout was beyond expectations. Residents from across the Western Region trooped to the venue in large numbers, filling every available space within and outside the premises.

According to eyewitness videos circulating online, the situation quickly became chaotic as the crowd grew uncontrollable. Despite repeated pleas from security personnel, many refused to leave, insisting on entering to secure discounted items.

A resident who filmed the scene explained in Fante that “Takoradi people no dey joke with discounts”, adding that many had traveled long distances to take advantage of the promo.

In response to the overwhelming crowd, Red Star Mall authorities were forced to postpone the opening to an unspecified date, citing safety concerns and the need to prevent possible stampedes.

The incident has since gone viral on social media, with many calling it a “sign of Ghana’s love for bargains” — and a reminder to businesses to properly plan crowd control for promotional events.
