Priest Caught in Viral Confrontation with Woman Inside Church Residence Sparks Outrage
A shocking incident at the Church of Our Lady of Aparecida in Nova Maringá, Brazil, has set social media ablaze after a video surfaced showing a tense confrontation involving a priest, a young woman, and her future father-in-law.
The dramatic event reportedly occurred on October 11, when Reverend Luciano Braga Simplicio, a 39-year-old parish priest who assumed his role only five months ago, was confronted by an angry group of men who stormed his residence next to the church.
According to circulating footage, the men acted on suspicions of an alleged romantic affair between the priest and a 21-year-old woman engaged to one of their family members. The group forced entry into the parish house, only to find the priest shirtless and wearing gym shorts, visibly anxious and knocking on a locked bathroom door.
Moments later, the woman’s future father-in-law grabbed a wooden stool and smashed the bathroom door open, revealing the young lady curled up under the sink in tears. Dressed in a revealing baby-doll nightgown, she appeared distraught as she was pulled into view.
Reports indicate that Reverend Simplicio had allowed the woman into the rectory earlier that morning while her fiancé was away on a work trip. Photos circulating online also show the woman actively participating in recent church activities alongside the priest.
In the video, Simplicio desperately tried to defend himself, claiming the encounter was purely innocent.
“She only came here to shower after working at the church all day — I was simply helping,” he pleaded, as the enraged men demanded answers.
The woman later echoed his explanation, stating she had only stopped by to change clothes after volunteering at the church.
However, the Diocese of Diamantino, which oversees the parish, has confirmed it has opened a formal canonical investigation into the matter. In a public statement, church authorities emphasized that “all necessary measures are being taken” to handle the scandal.
Pending the investigation’s outcome, Reverend Simplicio has been temporarily suspended from his priestly duties. The inquiry will determine whether he violated the 1983 Code of Canon Law, which prohibits priests from engaging in romantic or sexual relationships.
Adding to the controversy, the young woman filed a police complaint on October 13, accusing those who leaked the video of sharing her intimate images without consent.
The incident has divided public opinion — with some calling for leniency, while others demand accountability from both the priest and those who violated her privacy.
