The law exists for a reason — to be tested so that sanity can prevail. A young Ghanaian lady has officially reported a Twitter (X) influencer to the Ghana Police Headquarters this afternoon over the unlawful circulation of her private video.
What Happened
X (formerly known as Twitter) has become a space where users troll others, sometimes unprovoked. Recently, a blurry video showing a lady in her room using water on her body began trending online. Although it was difficult to identify the person in the video, popular Ghanaian social commentator Albert Nat Hyde, popularly known as Bongo Ideas, revealed that an X user identified as @Ruf_ayi (with over 70,000 followers) had been reported to the Ghana Police Headquarters by a lady named Borteley, known online as @Borqs, for sharing her private video publicly.
The Legal Angle
According to Ghana’s 1992 Constitution and the Cybercrime Act, 2020 (Act 1036), anyone who shares another person’s private content without their consent commits a serious offense and could face 10 to 25 years imprisonment.
The accused influencer, @Ruf_ayi, has since apologized for his actions, but the final decision lies with the victim, Borteley — whether she chooses to withdraw the case or not. Despite his apology, reports indicate that he is still making jokes about the incident online, while Borteley remains silent on whether she will accept the apology.
Public Reactions
Social media users are also dragging Bongo Ideas for sharing the report, calling him “a pot calling the kettle black” — since he is known for publishing controversial and image-damaging posts about popular figures himself.
Others have praised the move, saying it’s time Ghanaians learned that privacy laws exist and that sharing intimate or private videos online can lead to serious legal consequences.
Why This Matters
Many Ghanaians are unaware that such actions are punishable by law. If Borteley decides to proceed with the case, it could set a legal precedent and serve as a strong warning to people who carelessly post others’ private content online.
