A Nigerian woman has triggered widespread outrage on social media after claiming she would prefer being diagnosed with polio to being a poor young woman married to a poor man.
Her Viral Facebook Statement
In a controversial Facebook post, she wrote:
“I’d rather be struck with POLIO than be an 18–22-year-old poor girl getting married to a poor man. If you’re a poor girl, the last thing that should be on your mind is marriage to a poor man. What are you marrying for? Don’t even have a boyfriend — go and hustle.”
The post quickly went viral, sparking heated criticism from users who found her words insensitive and offensive to people living with disabilities.
Online Reactions
The post divided opinions — while many condemned her comparison as “heartless” and “tone-deaf,” others argued that her underlying message about financial independence before marriage was understandable, though poorly worded.
One commenter said the post “crossed moral and emotional boundaries,” while another noted that “her choice of words completely overshadowed what could have been an empowering message about self-reliance and ambition.”
