Seven years after the heartbreaking death of 13-year-old Elizabeth Ochanya Ogbanje, Nigerians have reignited the #JusticeForOchanya movement, calling for a renewed investigation and full prosecution of those accused in her alleged sexual abuse case.

The renewed outrage stems from what many describe as a deep failure of the justice system to hold the perpetrators accountable. In just 48 hours, the hashtag has amassed over 10,000 social media posts, with citizens, activists, and lawmakers joining forces to demand justice.
Ochanya, a native of Benue State, moved to Makurdi in 2013 to live with her aunt while pursuing her education and dreaming of becoming a doctor. However, reports later revealed that she endured five years of repeated sexual abuse allegedly at the hands of Dr. Andrew Ogbuja, a lecturer at the Benue State Polytechnic, and his son, Victor.

The abuse left her battling severe medical complications, including Vesicovaginal Fistula (VVF) — a condition that forced her to undergo multiple surgeries and treatments. Sadly, Ochanya’s frail body could not withstand the trauma, and she passed away on October 18, 2018, at the General Hospital in Otukpo.

Now, Nigerians are once again demanding that the government and judiciary reopen the case and ensure that those responsible for her suffering face the full weight of the law.
