Nigeria, Gabon, Cameroon, and DR Congo had all finished as runners-up in their respective qualifying groups, earning them another shot at securing a World Cup spot through a series of playoff clashes.
The Super Eagles opened their campaign with a dramatic 4-1 extra-time victory over Gabon, while DR Congo narrowly edged Cameroon 1-0. This set up a tense African Final between Nigeria and DR Congo. Nigeria struck first, scoring just three minutes into the game, but Elia Meschack levelled the score shortly before halftime. With both teams locked at 1-1 after 120 minutes, the match proceeded to a penalty shootout.

During the shootout, an unexpected confrontation erupted between Coach Erci and members of DR Congo’s technical bench. Although onlookers were initially unsure of what triggered the altercation, NFF officials and supporters quickly stepped in to restrain the Nigerian coach. The shootout continued, and Nigeria eventually fell 4-3 on penalties.
After the match, Erci clarified the incident. He claimed he saw some DR Congo staff repeatedly sprinkling water into the air during the penalties—a gesture he believed was linked to voodoo or spiritual manipulation meant to influence the outcome. When he attempted to stop the act, tempers flared, leading to the brief scuffle.
